The first post – January 10 2015

My retirement date is 31 March 2015. My last working day will be Thursday 26 March. Subtracting days owed, I have just 40 working days left. There are 10 ironed work shirts in the wardrobe so just 30 more to iron and I’m done.

After working for nearly 40 years, the last 35 with Northamptonshire Police, I decided to award myself a retirement present. There is also a need to cushion the shock of losing the rewarding aspects of working in a complex and challenging job. A bike ride around the coast of Great Britain should do the trick.

Other people do this…

Anna Hughes did it and created a superb blog. Mike Carter author of One man and his bike did it too.  I’m sure there must be loads of others. Some folk plan it and some just do it. My approach so far has been to plan, research, scrap the plan, research, plan, scrap the plan. I have learnt lots in the process though and I can’t wait to get started.

So counting down… about 12 weeks to go. The departure date is not fixed, but mid-April is looking good. Two weeks into the ride should see me up around Thurso. I am looking forward to renewing my acquaintance with some of the residents I met on my last visit in 2011.

DSCF2341Is it going to be cold in the north of Scotland at the beginning of May? Google says yes, but May and June see the most sunshine.
